Why This Matters

The current government previously committed to balancing the budget by the end of its second term and has shown continued progress towards achieving this goal. Over the past two budgets, deficit reduction projections have been revised, showing a new and improved trajectory towards balancing the budget.

After delivering 2018/19 results that are far ahead of schedule, deficit reduction projections have once again been revised and government is now projecting to reach balance in 2022/23.

Next steps

Progress on deficit reduction will continue, with Government currently projected to achieve balance in 2022/23.
